Design the connection between the Ferry Terminal at Colman Dock and 1st Avenue at Marion Street in relation to our program and the various systems of movement along the waterfront and within the city. Students will also work on a group digital site documentation that can be shared through the full duration of the project. The presentation should include diagrams of movement systems through the project and site; a physical model (scale tbd); sections at 1/32" scale; and perspectives.
in-studio review: wednesday, april 8th [Paolo and Brian]
form, structure and materials
Continued development of the design with a greater focus on the issues of form, structure and materials with careful attention to various functions that the project needs to consider. The presentation should include site diagrams; physical model at 1/32"; sections at 1/16"; and perspectives.
formal review: friday, april 17th [Paolo and guest]
site and environment
Develop the environmental aspects of the project within the larger site, taking into account daily as well as seasonal considerations with particular emphasis on seeing the project as an elevated parkscape that works with a carefully designed at-grade condition. Students will also work on a group physical model that will be shared for the remainder of the quarter. The presentation should include updated model at 1/32" scale as well as focusing on producing a site plan at 1/32" scale and sections and an above grade plan at 1/16" scale.
in-studio review: monday, april 27th [Brian and Claudia]
support and skin
More detailed consideration of the conditions of support, with particular attention to working on a site that is largely landfill. In addition students will consider the conditions of the exterior enclosure. The presentations should focus on section and elevation studies at 1/8" scale.
in-studio review: monday, may 4th [Brian, Claudia and Gijs]
synthesis 1
Students will synthesize their development of the project to that point for the purpose of a comprehensive mid-review of their designs. A full presentation of the design that encompasses most of the previous material, including site diagrams; a physical model and site plan at 1/32" scale; an above grade plan and sections at 1/16" scale; partial sections/elevations at 1/8" scale; and perspectives.
mid-review: friday, may 8th [Brian, Claudia, Gijs and guests]
synthesis 2
Students will develop their projects following the mid-review input for an informal in-studio pin-up to gauge the final development of their projects. This presentation would include revised versions of relevant drawings based upon the input from the mid-review.
progress pin-up: friday, may 15th [Brian and Gijs]
Students will continue the refinement of their projects in preparation for a final design review with mock-up for the final presentation/exhibition panel.
presentation review: wednesday, may 27th [Paolo and Brian]
Students will prepare their final presentation of their projects for review and exhibition. The presentation should include all drawn material from the mid-review at the proper scale to form a presentation panel (size tbd). A key presentation element should be perspective renderings that show the urban and architectural impact of the project. In addition, the presentation will include a final 1/32" scale model to fit into the shared site model.
final review: wednesday, june 3rd [Paolo, Brian and guests]
